Living books is a term coined by Charlotte Mason, a British Educator from the late 1800s. Living picture books are well-written, inspire the reader, and draw the reader into the subject at hand.
These are beautiful and classic books that you and your children could read over and over again!
I'll be sharing some of my favorite Christmas and Winter picture books as well as two master lists that you can download, with links to used copies.
Here are some of my favorite Christmas picture books:
The Candy Maker's Gift by David and Helen Haidle
Legend of the Candy Cane by Lori Wallburg
These books show how Candy Canes were created and what they symbolize.
They go perfectly with my Candy Cane Activities unit and there is a movie you can watch as well!
Night Tree by Eve Bunting
This book tells the story of a family tradition of going to the woods at night to decorate a tree for the wildlife. It's a cozy story!
'Twas the Evening of Christmas by Glenys Nellist
This is a great book for reader's of all ages, sharing about the birth of Jesus.
The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey (Longer read!)
This heartwarming story shows how a mother and son soften the heart of a grumpy carpenter.
Here are some of my favorite Winter picture books:
Stranger in the Woods and First Snow in the Woods by Carl R. Sams and Jean Stoick
All of the books by Carl R. Sams and Jean Stoick have wonderful wildlife photography to go along with their stories.
Annie and the Wild Animals, The Hat, The Three Snow Bears and The Mitten by Jan Brett
We love books by Jan Brett! Her illustrations are so detailed.
I have a literature unit that goes along with "The Three Snow Bears" for preschoolers!
